Webinar: Electric Space Propulsion

Horizon Europe project DEEP PPU & Horizon 2020 project GIESEPP MP webinar on Electric Space Propulsion

Electric propulsion is currently considered by all space actors as a key technology for the next generations of commercial and scientific satellites. This increasing interest is associated with massive mass savings, lower costs, improved efficiency, as well as lower pollution and longer mission time.

During this webinar…

Project  DEEP PPU and GIESEPP MP teams will provide you with the behind the scenes information related to various aspects of system development from the market requirements, power electronics designs process to the development of the system and its testing.

Target audiences

Students, young professionals and professionals interested in electric space propulsion and project DEEP PPU and GIESEPP MP advancements.

Power Electronics on the PPU: the path to shrink the volume and weight

Power Electronics is critical to supply all the systems in the spacecraft and keep the functionality. One of the main goals of this project is increasing the power density of the power converters of the PPU unit to reduce the volume and the size. This webinar will show which are the critical technologies that are being adopted to shrink the power converters, which is the role of the university and how the students are participating in this research project.

Thruster tests at the Justus Liebig University – the almost normal working day of a physics PhD student

How can you test a satellite thruster on Earth? What technical equipment is needed for this and who carries out the tests?

This presentation will provide answers to the above questions and many more, as well as exciting insights into a university laboratory from the perspective of a PhD student who is also part of the GIESEPP MP project.

Horizon Europe project DEEP PPU

The DEEP-PPU consortium will develop a disruptive Power Processing Unit for medium and high-power GIT. The project is a natural continuation of GIESEPP-MP, where a first step has been taken to develop a power supply for the screen grid and integrate it within the current PPU design for ArianeGroup RIT-2X thruster. The activity is focused on the improvement and optimization of the power electronics as one of the major cost drivers of an electric propulsion system, in particular for gridded ion technology. The developed solution will target a large mass and volume reduction (30%) as well as a cost reduction of approximately 50%. DEEP PPU will also simplify traditional Gridded Ion architecture by incorporating functions which are nowadays implemented with additional units.

Horizon 2020 project GIESEPP MP

The aim of Horizon 2020 project GIESEPP MP is to foster Europe’s competitiveness in the global satellite market, the first European Plug and Play Gridded Ion Engine Standardised Electric Propulsion Platform (GIESEPP), operating ArianeGroup ion engines with the option of alternative thrusters, continues to develop within the GIESEPP MP project funded by the Horizon 2020 framework programme of the European Union. The project aims to continue the developments of the previously funded project GIESEPP (Gridded Ion Engine Standardised Electric Propulsion Platform), which sought to build and test a modular propulsion solution to a technical readiness level of TRL5 (Technology validated in relevant environment) in its different configurations for LEO, GEO and space exploration missions. The restructured consortia will demonstrate and pre-qualify a prototype-like system in a relevant environment.
